Group LTD is a valuable benefit for both the employer
and the employee. It allows the employer to provide the employees
with a uniform and non-discriminatory salary continuation program
on a fully insured basis. It gives the employees peace of mind
in knowing that a significant portion of their salary will be replaced
in the event of their long term disability.
Long Term Disability (LTD) is a benefit that is usually paid for
by the employer and only covers the employee. The carriers, in
fact, discount the premiums when the employer has agreed to pay
the full premium.
Elimination
Period - LTD is usually written with a 30, 60, or 90 day elimination
period. The elimination period is the period that the employee
must be disabled before the benefits begin.
Benefits
- Benefits are written as a percentage of the employee's monthly
pay. They are typically 60% or 66 2/3% of monthly pay with a maximum
monthly benefit of $5,000; $6,000; $7, 000; etc. per month.
Benefit
Offsets - Benefits are generally offset by the amount the employee
receives from: Social Security, SDI, and Workers' Compensation.
Duration
of Benefits - Benefits will usually be payable as long as the disability
lasts, up to age 65. They can usually extend beyond age 65 if the
disability began after age 60.
